Book Reviews

Here are some new reviews of books that I recently read. Feel free to post comments if you read the books or if they sound like something you would like to read.

Vive La Paris - by Esme Raji Codell
fiction - grades 5 -8
Paris McCray is an African American girl in 5th grade that is taking piano lessons with Mrs. Rosen, a holocaust survivor. Mrs. Rosen teaches Paris about France and offers her unsolicited advice. Paris also learns about the bully in her brother's life and other bullies in the world. Paris misunderstands Mrs. Rosen when she explains that she had to wear a yellow star and had numbers tattooed on her arm. Paris thinks she was in some kind of "club" or "gang". Paris learns about the holocaust and is overwhelmed. Now she knows what people are capable of and it affects her deeply. The dialect of the characters are true to form and yiddish expressions are sprinkled throughout the story. It is an enjoyable book to read but deals with very serious issues.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 - by Christopher Paul Curtis
historical fiction - grades 4 - 7
Newbery Honor Book and Coretta Scott King Award
This is a humorous and well written book about an African American family. It is told from the viewpoint of Kenny, a 4th grader explaining some of the antics in school and with his brother and sister. The family travels in their big old car from Flint, Michigan to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama. As historical fiction, the book offers a glimpse into what life was like for African Americans in 1963. They are there during the church bombing and experience one of the tragic moments in American history. This book is written with the same sense of humor as Bud, Not Buddy, Curtis' Newbery Award book and is a great read.

Wow, this book sounds interesting. Maybe I'll read it for my Independent Reading Log when I'm done reading my other book, Leap Day, by Wendy Mass.

I read a very interesting book called Safe at Second by Scott Johnson. It is a fiction book that is probably good for grades 6-8. It is about a high-schooler named Todd who is a great pitcher. One day at practice he takes a ine-drive straight in the eye. You should read the book to find out how Todd gets past this tragedy and if he will ever play baseball ever again.

Wow. That sounds like a great book. I read a book called Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall by Wendy Mass. I thought it was such a great book. I definately recommend this book for grades 6-9. It is about a girl who gets hit by a dodge ball in gym and she gets knocked out. Her heaven looks a lot like her mall.

I read a book called The Aurora County All-Stars. it is about a 12 year old boy, House Jackson, who is the star pitcher in his county. House loves baseball more than anything. every year, the Aurora County All-Stars have the biggest and only game on July 4th, against the Raleigh Redbugs. the previous year, House Jackson broke is elbow and could not play the only game of the year. House is very determined to play the next game. the only problem is that there is a pageant on the same day as the game. all the players' moms make them partcipate in the pageant. eventually, the baseball team is able to convince their parents to play in the game instead of the pageant. one week before the game, house hurts his elbow warming up pitching. House goes to the doctor and he says that House can not play in the game. House refuses to miss another game and pitches in the game anyway. House is only able to pitch 8 innings but the Aurora County All-Stars are able to win the game by one run.

Heat by Mike Lupica is an amazing book mostly for grades 6-8 about a boy named Michael who moves with his brother and father from Cuba. Their father dies and they are living alone and only a few people know because if social services find out, they will seperate them. Michael is an amazing basebll pitcher andmust stop playing when people think he's too old. They can't find his birth certificate and think it is still in Cuba. This is a suspensful and touching book that will make you read until you can't stop!

Travel Team by Mike Lupica is a fiction story about a boy that is cut by the travel team because he is too short. Danny is the main character and his parents are divorced. His dad used to play professional basketball. When he gets cut, his dad forms a new travel team for all of the people that were told that they weren't good enough. Danny may be the shortest one out there, but he sure has the most heart.
